Each year the MIT Technology Review lists ’10 Breakthrough Technologies’ that are predicted to have a significant impact in the near future. It is also interesting to look back to previous years to see when some of the technologies that are now considered common place were first mentioned, for example crowdfunding in 2012, engineered stem cells in 2010, low cost DNA sequencing in 2009 and distributed storage in 2004.
As always, the list makes fascinating reading. From this years list, ‘additive manufacturing’ (3-D printing) could have a huge impact on the manufacturing industry, especially for bespoke items, whilst ‘ultra-efficient solar power’ has the potential to reshape the economics of renewable energy.
